"Why Wrestlers Make the Best Employees"

"More enduringly than any other sport, wrestling teaches self-control and pride. Some have wrestled without great skill—none have wrestled without pride." ~ Dan Gable

Today's workforce is extremely competitive. When comparing resumes it's easy to get lost in all the bullet points of software literacy and past responsibilities. If you really want to separate two seemingly qualified employees, bring them in for an interview and ask a simple question, "Have you ever participated in sports at an elite level?"

"Current research indicates that individuals who have competed in elite level athletics, i.e., collegiate, international, or professional level competition possess higher levels of emotional intelligence than their non-athlete counterparts," says Richard Mendelson, I.O. psychologist and founder of Dynamic IO Consultants, a consulting firm specializing in human capital management and other services.  [Read Full Article]

Titans like to draft players with wrestling backgrounds

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 7, 2012, 8:03 AM EDT NBCSports.com

When the Titans spent their second-round draft pick on linebacker Zach Brown and their third-round draft pick on defensive tackle Mike Martin, they saw one aspect of the players' backgrounds that they particularly liked: Both were successful high school wrestlers.

Titans General Manager Ruston Webster said the team views it as a plus when players on the draft board have a background as a wrestler.

"It's something that to me, when a guy has been a wrestler, especially when he has been a successful wrestler, it says something about his toughness and his commitment," Webster told the Nashville City Paper.

Drafting a player with a wrestling background worked last year when fifth-round defensive tackle Karl Klug led the team with seven sacks as a rookie. Webster said he'll keep looking for wrestling backgrounds when he's looking for promising prospects in the draft.

"To me, wrestlers do have that natural leverage, and they understand leverage and they understand how to use their hands," Webster said, "and typically they are tough guys."

16 STEPS

1. Never underestimate your opponent.
2. Work on your weaknesses until they become your strong points.
3. Remember that a great effort is usually the result of a great attitude.
4. Dedicate yourself to a mighty purpose.
5. Win with humility, lose with grace.
6. Ignore those who discourage you.
7. Work to improve your moral and spiritual strengths as well as your physical ones.
8. Remember that how you conduct yourself off the field is as important as how you conduct yourself on the field.
9. Talent is God-given…be humble. Fame is man-given…be thankful. Conceit is self-given…be careful.
10. Don't ask to be deprived of tension and discipline- these are the tools that shape success.
11. Do what has to be done, when it has to be done, and as well as it can be done.
12. Remember that when you're not working to improve, your competition is.
13. Always give your best.
