In their final competition of the season, our Junior High Wrestlers showed that they are here to wrestle...and wrestle hard. Of the ten wrestlers on the team, four made it to the finals and took home medals!
At the Mendenhall Middle School Tournament in Pleasanton (March 27), Josh Shapland, Christian Meekins, and Eric Fisher all took second place. Matthew Bell won three of his four matches to grab third place. Even more impressive is that nine of the boys are first-year wrestlers and one is in his second year.
Congratulations to the Team: Reagan Rogers, Wiliam Kizanis, Ben Carter, Christian Meekins,Craig Mariani, Eric Fisher, Matthew Bell, Alex Parrella, Cody Adams, Josh Shapland. Well done.

Cody on platform at Fallon Tourney
The junior-high wrestlers were tough and aggressive at the Mustang Classic wrestling tournament last Saturday (March 19th) at Fallon Middle School in Dublin. Of the eight wrestlers competing, four brought home medals. Cody Adams won two matches and grabbed the top Viking spot for the day with a second place finish. Taking forth in their weight classes were Alex Parrella, Matthew Bell, and Ben Carter.
Viking Wrestling fans all held their breath when Reagan Rogers went into overtime with a 12-12 tie. Despite a sore shoulder, Reagan was aggressive, took the first shot, and scored a takedown for a 14-12 win. Also bringing the fans to a huge cheer was William Kizanis who scored his first pin for the season. Craig Mariani surprised an opponent by taking him down and pinning him in the first seconds of the match. Josh Shapland went the distance against some tough seventh-grade competition.

The 2011 junior-high wrestling season is well underway with ten 6th, 7th, and 8th graders (with all but one in their first year of wrestling). In their opening scrimmage last week, they showed all the technique and attitude of a more seasoned team.
On Saturday March 12th, they competed in their first tournament, the Bulldog Middle School Wrestling Tournament in Livermore. Our junior high boys wrestled hard - Viking Style - against a very experienced group of competitors. Matthew Bell won second place and Ben Carter took third.
Please see the schedule and come support these hard-working athletes as they wrestle through the month of March.

Andrew Hus was the champion in his weight class, taking first place with a perfect record of 3 wins and 0 losses for the day. This is Andrew's second championship in a row, having placed first in both tournaments that the team has competed in this season!
After losing once, Josh Shapland and Mathew Olivas each wrestled up through the brackets to take third place in their weight classes.
Well done, Andrew, Josh, and Mathew!

The wrestlers on Valley Christian's first-ever junior-high wrestling team are off to a great start. All the boys have been practicing hard to learn the fundamentals of wrestling and prepare for competition. They faced their first competition in matches against East Avenue Middle School and Junction Avenue Middle School in Livermore last week (March 4th). All of the boys looked good considering they had never been in a wrestling match before. We even had some victories.
Following up on this good start, they showed a huge leap in improvement against Junction Avenue and Mendenhall middle schools in Livermore on Tuesday (March 9th). They wrestled smart, executing the techniques and strategies that they had been practicing; and they wrestled aggressively, never stopping to be on the attack even against wrestlers with more experience.
Come out and support the Junior High Wrestlers this Saturday at Granada High School in the 2nd Annual Bulldog Tournament. Wrestling starts at 8:00AM.

To all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade boys: Come join Viking Wrestling! This is a new program for junior high school. We had a very successful and fun season in high-school wrestling and would like you to enjoy this sport, too!
Wrestling is for everyone. It doesn't’t matter if you are 50 pounds or 200 pounds, 4 feet tall or 7 feet tall, you will wrestle boys who are the same weight as you. There is no advantage or disadvantage to size. No prior experience is required.
Wresting is an ancient sport. It is 15,000 years old. You can win matches using the same techniques that they have been using since ancient times.
Wrestling is a modern sport. Over 135 nations sponsor a wrestling federation. It is one of the top three medal winning sports for the United States in international competition.
Wrestling is safe and fun. Like all athletics and recreation, a chance of injury always exists. But the rules, coaches, and officials are there to protect the safety the wrestlers to the greatest extent possible.
Wrestling is a great way to train for other sports. You will develop agility, quickness, balance, flexibility, coordination, endurance, power, aggressiveness, discipline, and a winning attitude.
Wrestling is training for life. You will benefit from all the finest traditions of VCS athletics: spiritual, academic, and athletic excellence; maintaining the highest degree of sportsmanship; conditioning to excellent physical fitness, and honoring God in all that we do. We will pursue Victory with Honor.
