This year was a marked year for all of the Women's Volleyball Teams.
Varsity led the way, making it into the NCS playoffs and winning in the
quarter-finals against Bay of SF. See the article written by the Dublin
Patch newspaper:
http://dublin.patch.com/articles/girls-volleyball-valley-christian-toughs-out-playoff-win.
During the Semi-final match against University High School, they fell to a
team that made it into the State Championships. Varsity had a great year
with endless memories to think of when they need them. Rebecca Silva was
awarded League 1st Team as a Setter. What that means is that all Coaches in
our League thought she should represent the League as their starting Setter.
Ashley Baldi was awarded 2nd Team as a Middle Blocker and Hitter. Ashley
was up against girls that were 6-2 and 6-1 but the League Coaches admired
her professionalism and tenacious fire, roofing those same girls. Maclane
Hoenig was awarded an Honorable Mention as an Outside Hitter for her Spirit
and continuous positive attitude.
JV finished their league in 1st place losing only 1 match the entire season. Although there is not a Championship tournament for this group, there was
still outstanding play seen by the likes of Megan Mathews and Tia Woodson
hitting Outside, Rebekah Rogers already Setting a 5-1 system, Alex Aqua and
Oseme Ibhawo equally causing trouble at the Middle, Kylie Greer our leading
Ace Server, and Izzy Ayad and Berkeley Skillcorn as our big Opposites. This
was a large squad as well and next year will be exciting to see some of
these girls play up to Varsity.
JH girls A had a positive season and had to face many adversities when they
lost their Setter, Alyssa Guthrie, due to injury in the beginning of the
Season. They quickly adapted to keep the drive alive and learned a lot
about playing in tough situations. Alyssa Arace was the League's best
hitter by far. There were no hitters in the League that could hit with time
and pace as she did. Kate Sorel followed with her own heat at OH. Adrianna
Armendariz and Ellen Kiser played MB while Mindy Macalino lived and breathed
OP. Lastly, Whitney Carter owned the back court playing Libero.

JH girls B capped the season with a League Championship title! Rookie Head
Coaches Rebecca Silva and Ashley Baldi took their love of the game to the
next level by leading these young girls from a great come-from-behind
series. The semifinals was 1st vs. 4th and they took out the #1 seed 2-1 in
sets to lead them into the Championship match. Tough serving and great
on-court presence helped them win the Championship with nice margin. The
entire Team played with unity and so kudos to all: Mariam Anthony, Ashley
Barker, Olivia Cano, Tawny Halter, Stephanie Kerry, Samantha Lai, Anna
Michel, Christina Nakao, Alexandria Parra, Brianna Prestia, Rachel Rogers,
Sarah Sanchez, and Samantha Soong.

Vikings are net positive and win 4 tough matches at the Oak Grove Tournament, nailing 2nd place. The Gold rounds were hard fought battles and King’s Academy narrowly won the Gold in the Championship Match. It was nice to see the camaraderie after Championships when both Teams prayed in the middle of the court to give thanks to God for the great tournament.
Overall Vikings go 11-6. The Vikings would love everyone’s support for the next several weeks when the girls finally get to start playing on Home court again. There are 2 matches this week. The first is against Redwood Christian on Thursday, 10/6 @ 5:30PM (JV, 4PM). The second is against Athenian on Friday, 10/7 @ 5:30PM (JV, 4PM). Bring your spirit!

This week was a powerful week for the Vikings. 4 matches in 5 days and the 5th day was a tournament. The first match on 9/14 was against Logan High School, a Division 1 with on average over 4,000 students enrolled per year. In 1 Samuel 17, a story about David and Goliath fits this well. Logan had 2 tall 6-2 MB and an aura of strong confidence when stepping on the court. That didn't stop the Vikings attack or will to fight. With the talents and unique abilities bestowed unto Valley Christian, they took them to 5 sets (2-3) in an exciting 13-15 finish. Although this ends in a VC loss, it was a mental victory and a call that this small Division 5 school on the hill is ready.
The second match on 9/16 was against the California School of the Deaf and was friendly. VC won this 3-0 and was able to rotate all players in. First outings include Shelby Fabianac (OH), Madison McCleve (OH), and Rebecca Rogers (S).
The first league match against Athenian on 9/17 was marred with controversy when an out call on 23-22 (VC leading) was awarded to Athenian. The down ref did not have a good angle to see where the ball dropped so he said he did not see it. Hence, the up ref was left to rely on the line judge and take the 4th set to 23-23. With mental disruption in full force, the Vikings dropped the set 23-25 and match 1-3. VC is looking forward to the re-match on 10/8 where questionable calls will not affect VC play. VC has learned from this and has become mentally stronger.
The week ends with a tournament that took place on 9/18 at Berean Christian. VC took an outstanding 3rd place against tough Teams and will take the momentum from this into next week matches against Head Royce 9/22 and St. Elizabeth 9/23.

Last night, Valley Christian defeated 2009 north coast section champions Rincon Valley Christian at their home court in a 3-1 thrilling match. The set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 23-25, and 25-18. The first set started with a strong Vikings defense notching 23 total digs, balanced across 7 different players. Allison Frank (L) led the overall stat count with 18 digs and great overall passing. Rebecca Silva (S) had her first double-double, marking 31 assists and 11 digs, as well as 5 aces that disrupted Rincon’s passing system.
Celestine Jahren (OP) had a break-out night with 11 kills and 3 blocks against a tall Rincon team consisting of a 6-2 OH and two 6-0 MBs. In that match, Celestine was also able to stuff block the 6-2 OH which assisted in taking her mentally out of her hitting rhythm. Lauren Kershner (OH) had a solid night with 8 kills, 1 block, 5 aces, and 13 digs. Ashley Baldi (MB), Megan Maxwell (MB), and Maclane Hoenig (OH) rounded out the offense with a combined 17 kills. Elisha Clerigo (DS) brought excellent passing and had a perfect 3.0 pass rating in the first set. Kailey Hanks aka Keels, Serving Specialist, notched 5 aces out of 17 attempts, giving her a decent 30% ace efficiency.
VC played with great energy and stayed in-system all night long. They continued to deal with the tall Rincon attack with consistency. In the final 4th set, VC adjusted their rotation to line up Celestine, Ashley, and Lauren against their primary 6-2 OH, and they shut her down early. With the primary attacker out of rhythm, Rebecca ran a combination 2X play with Ashley and Lauren to give the Vikings match point.

Valley Christian, a Division-5 school with 300+ students, won their first match today against Dublin High, a Division-2 school with more than 1,500 students. The set scores were 25-23, 25-11, 21-25, and 25-22. Overall the Vikings had a decent hitting percentage at 26% with 41 total kills in the match. Ashley Baldi (MB) and Lauren Kershner (OH) each had 9 kills while Megan Maxwell (MB) led the stat with 10 kills.
Defensively, a total of 42 digs were counted, led by Allison Frank (L) with 25 digs, averaging 6.25 digs per set. Ashley led the blocking category with 2 solo blocks and 2 assisted, averaging 1 block per set. Rebecca Silva (S) had a total 32 assists out of 86 attempts, giving her a 37% setting efficiency rating. More interestingly, Dublin had difficulty getting the ball back over when she served, giving her the serving stat leader of 7 aces.
VC won this match due to their consistent defense and solid offense. Dublin had trouble with serve receive and the VC attack. However, Dublin rallied back in the 3rd set when VC appeared to play out-of-system. Dublin brought in a tall MB at that time and her presence led to VC hitting errors. VC was able to adapt and came back into system with improved serve receive. Maclane Hoenig (OH) closed out the match with a left side kill and the crowd was in an uproar. Special thanks to Dublin HS in playing a great game and for their excellent sportsmanship. God bless to all who attended.
