Valley vs. Head-Royce

The Vikings hosted Head Royce in their last league game of the season and WON THE GAME 2 to 1! Head Royce came into this game undefeated in league play with 9 wins, 0 losses and 2 ties. They had already clinched first place in the BCLE. This was their only loss of the season and our only win in league play. What a tremendous way to end our season with our seven seniors playing their last game for Valley Christian and going out with such a wonderful win. I could not be happier for our seniors right now.

Head Royce scored the first goal in the 25th minute of play in the first half. I had challenged the team to keep them scoreless for 25 minutes and they did, which I thought was an admirable goal playing such a good team. They maintained their defensive effort, then, in the 72nd minute of the second half, Dakota Yates scored a tremendous goal from a free kick from about 30 yards out that went into the upper left corner of the goal, that was never touched by the Head Royce Keeper. Then in the 79th minute, Tyer Greer scored the winning goal from an assist by James Leyva. Valley then locked down the game for the last couple of minutes of stoppage time and came away with the best victory of the past four years. It was a tremendous effort by all and I am so very happy for our team.

Our seniors playing their last game for Valley Christian are: Dakota Yates, Tyler Greer, Zach Paulson, Josh Hus, Josh Ray, Cliff Woodward and Cody Van Dussen.

Valley vs. Athenian

The Vikings traveled to San Ramon this afternoon to play Athenian in their second match of the season. Valley lost 5 – 2. The Vikings established a strong defense for the first 25 min. holding Athenian scoreless. The team had made an objective to keep Athenian scoreless for the first 20 min. of play and met their objective. Andrew Park got injured and had to leave the game and it was then that Athenian scored their first goal at the 25th min. I was proud of the team for setting the objective and exceeding it. Valley only allowed the one goal in the first half. As we adjusted our lineup to try and give us more offense, it weakened our defense and Athenian took advantage. I pulled Tyler Greer out of the goal for the last 15 minutes of play and he managed to score both of Valley's goals of the match, one at the 71st min. and then again at the 74th min. He was assisted on these two goals by Cliff Woodward and Dakota Yates.

The Vikings host Head Royce on Monday for their last game of the season. We will honor our Seniors after the game.

Valley vs. St. Elizabeth

The Vikings traveled to San Leandro this afternoon to play St. Elizabeth in their second meeting of the season and lost the game 2 – 1. The Vikings continue to struggle to finish their shots that result in goals. Valley out shot St. Elizabeth 31 to 11 and dominated possession of the ball but came up short for the win. Tyler Greer scored Valley's only goal in the 50th minute unassisted from the left side of the field. The Vikings travel to Athenian on Friday for their second to last match of the season.

10.13.11

Valley vs. Redwood Christian

The Vikings traveled to San Lorenzo this afternoon to play Redwood Christian in their second meeting this season and lost 5 – 0. The Vikings came out flat and Redwood scored two goals within the first 5 minutes then held them for the rest of the first half, out shooting them 9 to 7. In spite of marking their best player man-to-man, he still managed to score two times in the second half. At that point, the deficit was to much to get back into the game. The Vikings have three more games in their season and now have an overall record of 7 – 12 and in league play, 0 – 9. At this point, making league playoffs is not possible. We travel to St. Elizabeth on the 16th for our second meeting with them.

Valley Hosted Bentley

Valley hosted Bentley this afternoon in their second meeting of the season and lost 1 – 0. Bentley scored on a Penalty Kick at the 16th min. of the first half. The Vikings played one of (if not the best games) of the season this afternoon. They completely dominated the second half out shooting Bentley 7 shots to 1 with one shot hitting the crossbar. The Vikings showed intensity and effort on every play. Andrew Park was assigned the job of marking their best player man-to-man the entire game and completely shut him down giving Valley the opportunity to win this game. With out Andrew's excellent play in this assignment the Vikings had little chance of winning. Andrew would definitely receive today's game ball.

Records: Overall – 6 wins, 11 losses. League Play – 0 – 8.

10.08.11

Valley Hosted College Prep

Valley hosted College Prep this afternoon in their second meeting of the season and lost 4 – 0. In an effort to find the right mix of player personnel and positions to give us a stronger mid-field, Tyler Greer was moved from this Goal Keeper position to mid-field and was replaced by Josh Ray. With Tyler nursing a bad knee this season, he could not hold down that position for long, but did a good job for the time he was there. Josh Ray played an tremendous game as the Keeper with 7 saves. The Vikings out shot College Prep 13 to 11, but continues to struggle on the offensive side of the field to finish shots that result in goals. Valley continued to play hard and actually controlled the ball better in the second half, but after a penalty kick at the 69th minute that made the score 3 – 0, College Prep's momentum was hard to stop and they scored again at the 71st minute.

Vikings vs. Head Royce

The Vikings fell to Head Royce this afternoon 5 - 0 in their sixth league game. The Vikings battled strong for the first 20 min. of the game but soon fell behind 2 - 0 by the end of the first half. Head Royce continues to be one of the strongest teams in our league and always a tough game. They are in first place in the BCLE with 7 wins and one tie. In spite of the loss, Tyler Greer put in a strong performance in the goal with 13 saves for the Vikings. We will take the day off tomorrow and gear up for our home game on Friday versus College Prep. The Vikings now have a 5 - 9 overall win loss record and 0 - 6 in league play.

09.30.11

Vikings vs. Oakland Military

The Vikings hosted Oakland Military Institute this afternoon in a non-league game and lost 2 - 1 on a goal in the 73ed minute. It was a hard fought game by both teams. Each team only had about 12 shots on goal the whole game. Tyler Greer made two fine saves in the goal. Taylor Juras scored Valley's only goal on an assist by Dakota Yates. Valley had two wonderful shots (one by Daniel Kim and the other by Spencer Umidon) hit the cross bar late in the second half that were heart breaking. The Vikings pick back up with league play on Tuesday against Head Royce in Oakland.
Coach Walker

09.29.11

Vikings vs. Alma Heights

The Vikings hosted Alma Heights this afternoon in a non-league game and won 3 - 0. We had not earned a win in the last six games, so it felt good to get a win and put three in the net doing it. All three goals came in the second half. The first was from a long free kick from Dakota Yates at the 43ed min. The second from Cliff Woodward at the 55 min. and the third at the 70th min. by Daniel Kim. The Vikings out shot Alma in the second half 11 to 1 with the aid of the wind at their backs. We turn right around and play OMI tomorrow on our home field. We have a previous win against OMI back on August 30th in a close game. The Vikings now have an overall record of 6 wins and 7 loses. In league play we are 0 - 5.

09.27.11

Vikings hosted St. Elizabeth

Valley hosted St. Elizabeth in their fifth league game this afternoon and lost 3 - 1. In spite of out shooting them 23 to 12 and dominating play the Vikings could not finish them off. Valley scored first with a beautiful goal by Bucky Layton assisted by Cliff Woodward on cross from the left side of the field. St. Elizabeth then scored at the 19th min. and again at the 25th minute on a penalty kick. St. Elizabeth kicked in their third goal at the 71st. min. Valley had two penalty kicks in the second half and could not convert either into a goal. The Vikings played a very intense last ten minutes of the game pressing at every ociasion and every position, but could not finish a shot.

The Vikings host Alma Heights on Thursday then turn right around and host OMI on Friday to complete a three game week.

Overall record is 5 and 7. In league play we are 0 and 5.

09.22.11

Vikings hosted Athenian

The Vikings hosted Athenian this afternoon in their fourth league game and lost 2 - 0. Athenian scored in the 5th min. and at the 75th min. of the game. The bad news is the Vikings lost the game, the good news is that they played better as a team today than they have in the past two games. We will take the day off Friday and rest for a three game schedule next week.
Coach Walker

09.19.11

Vikings vs. Lick Wilmerding

The Vikings hosted Lick Wilmerding in a non-league game this afternoon on the hill and lost 5 - 0. The score was tied 0 - 0 at the half then, at the 70 minute mark Lick scored their first goal, then proceeded to score at the 72 minute, the 76th minute, the 79th minute and at the 80 minute mark. So, once again the Vikings allowed all five goals in the space of 10 minutes.  Valley played a good first half showing much improved play from their last game against College Prep but continues to struggle if scored upon first and in general has a hard time finishing the ball for goals.  The Vikings will host Athenian this Thursday in their 4th league game of the season.
Coach Walker

09.15.11

Vikings vs. Berkeley

The Vikings traveled to Berkeley this afternoon and got out played by College Prep, losing the game 5-1. We did not even score the one goal credited to us, it was kicked into the goal by one of the College Prep players. The Vikings once again had a lapse in defense, being scored on 3 times in less than 5 minutes at about the 15 minute mark of the first half. We put in a better effort the second half but it was too little too late to make much difference. The Vikings will take the day off Friday and regroup for our game on Monday vs. Lick Wilmerding.
Coach Walker

09.13.11

Vikings vs. Redwood Christian

Valley hosted Redwood Christian this afternoon in its second league game and lost 2 - 0. In spite of marking their star player man-to-man, he still managed to score twice with-in 5 min. at about the 60 min. of the game. Valley played a strong defensive first half and the shot tallies were about even. After the second score, Valley's intensity lessoned and could not muster a goal.

The Vikings travel to College Prep on Thursday for their third league game.

09.09.11

Vikings vs. Bentley

The Vikings traveled to Layayette this afternoon to play Bentley in their first league game and fell short of victory by 2 goals. The Vikings were down two key starters for their first league game and played honorably considering this loss of personnel.  There was one lapse in play in the 32 and 37th min. of the first half that allowed Bentley's star player to score twice.  Other than that, Valley dominated play, especially in the second half out shooting Bentley 12 to 4 and dominating in time of possession.  The Vikings continue to struggle to finish play by putting shots in the back of the net. Tyler Greer made 5 key saves to keep us competitive to the end.  We host Redwood Christian on Tuesday for our second league game.

09.06.11

Vikings vs. Fremont Christian

The Vikings traveled to Walnut Creek on Tuesday (9/6) to play their last Pre-season game against Contra Costa Christian and came away with another victory. Cliff Woodward picked up a fumbled ball by the keeper and put it into the net in the 58th min. which was shot by Jordan Murdoch from a free kick. Ryan Baker finished off the scoring for Valley by putting in a penalty kick at the 68th min. giving the Vikings a 2 - 0 win. The Vikings finished their pre-season with a 5 win, 1 loss record and have momentum as they travel to Bentley on Friday for their first league game.

09.02.11

Vikings vs. Fremont Christian

The Vikings traveled to Fremont this afternoon and beat Fremont Christian 1- 0 in a very exciting game. Missing 3 starters due to Football and injury, the Vikings managed to come together and once again win the game in the last 5 minutes.  Dakota Yates scored a beautiful goal from about 25 yards out that sailed past their Keeper into the upper right corner in the 73ed minute of the game. It truly was an incredible strike of the ball. We had outstanding defensive play from Cody VanDussen and Zach Paulson.  Tyler Greer played one of his best games in the goal especially in the second half and now has two shut-outs in a row. We had strong bench play from Spencer Umidon and Mathew Valci. The Vikings will take a much needed rest over the Labor Day weekend after playing 3 games this week and will hit the road on Tuesday to play their last Pre-season game against Contra Costa Christian in Walnut Creek.

Vikings vs. North Valley Baptist

The Vikings played their Home Opener this season against North Valley Baptist and won it in the last three minutes by a score of 1 to 0 on a beautiful goal by Ryan Baker from the left side of the field.  Valley dominated play with 30 shots on goal but continues to struggle in getting those shots into the back of the net.  The Vikings now have a 3 win 1 loss preseason record and travel to Fremont tomorrow for their 5th preseason game.

08.30.11

Vikings vs. OMI

The Vikings traveled to Coast Guard Island this afternoon to play their third pre-season game against Oakland Military Institute and came away with a win, out scoring OMI five goals to four. It was a truly an offensive battle that was fueled by a small field. The Vikings scored first by a shot from Dakota Yates at the 10 min. mark. Then OMI scored at the 16th min. and again at the 26th min. Bucky Layton put in a nice goal from a cross by Ryan Baker at the 31st min. Andrew Park playing the outside mid-field position, put in a goal at the 62 min. but OMI came right back in the 64th min. with a goal.  Jordan Murdoch put one of the most beautiful goals of the game from about 35 yards out off a free kick that sailed over the OMI Keeper into the upper right side of the goal untouched in the 65th min. OMI would not die and came right back with another goal at the 69th min. Finally, Sean Lee playing at the Center Mid position scored Valley’s final goal at the 73ed min. and the Vikings were able to hold off OMI for the last 7 min. to capture the victory.

If you like high scoring games, this was the one to watch. As a coach it was a little to high scoring from a defensive standpoint, yet I am glad the boys came away with the win and several players who do not normally score got a goal. Onward to our first home game vs. North Valley Baptist on Thursday.

2011 Second Pre-Season Game Summary

The Vikings traveled to San Francisco this afternoon to play their second pre-season game against Urban High School. The Vikings lost a hard fought game 2 – 0. One of the the scores against us was a penalty kick due to a hand ball in the penalty box. The other goal was a beautiful shot made by an Urban player from about 25yards out that went into the upper right corner of the goal.

In spite of the loss, I was very pleased with our play this afternoon against a very good team. It was probably one of our best efforts this season and maybe last season combined. Our fullback line did an outstanding job with Andrew Park and Zack Paulson defending the mid-field the best I have seen in a long time. Cody VanDussen and Jordan Murdock also played well on the wings. Shots on goal by both teams was 12 each. Tyler also contributed 6 saves to our defensive effort.

We travel to OMI on Tuesday for our third pre-season game.

08.23.11

2011 Pre-Season

Dakota Yates put in our third goal with a head shot in the 25th min. of the second half. The Vikings dominated play by out shooting the Emery team 25 to 5, yet had a difficult time finishing the ball. Emery scored in the 37th min. of the first half and the 28th min. of the second half.  The Vikings travel to San Francisco on Friday to play Urban High School.
