The Vikings traveled to San Leandro this afternoon to play a make-up game vs. St. Elizabeth that would have wrapped up the season. The head Referee declared the field unplayable due to a large mud puddle in front of one of the goals. So, the game was cancelled. We do not anticipate trying to reschedule this game at this point in the season, the Vikings have now completed the 2010 season. Our final records are: overall = 5 wins, 12 losses, 4 ties. League = 1 win, 9 losses, 1 tie.
The players and parents will meet Tuesday evening at Frankie, Johnnie & Luigi's restaurant for a team party to celebrate the season.

Valley hosted Head Royce this afternoon in it’s last home game of the season and lost 3 – 0. The Vikings played hard and never gave up but had to bow to a more skilled team. This loss has removed any chance of making league play-offs this year. With two games left to play, the Vikings will be working to continue to improve their team play and finish strong for some momentum towards next season. We honored our two Seniors (George Prieto and Alex Buscher) after the game highlighting their career’s here at Valley and presenting them with a Rose. We then prayed for them as they move on to the next stage of their lives.

Bentley hosted Valley this afternoon in their second game of league play. The game ended in a 0 – 0 tie. It was a strong defensive effort by both teams. Valley dominated play controlling mid-field and taking 27 shots vs. 9 by Bentley. The Vikings just could not find the back of the net today. It was a shame that we did not come away with a win for the effort made. Valley completely controlled play in the first half. Dakota Yates making his return to mid-field from an injury laden season provided a tremendous boost to our play. Having lost to Bentley 4-2 in our last meeting, the Vikings continue to improve and if we can stay healthy, should finish the season strong. Our league record is now 1 – 6 – 1.

Tyler Greer had 8 saves and Andrew Park played his best match of the season at left fullback. The Vikings still are struggling with illness and some lingering injuries but with God’s help we should be back to full strength soon. The Vikings hosted Bentley this afternoon in their second league game of the season and lost 4 – 2. The Vikings were down in numbers due to injury and family responsibilities only having one sub. The Vikings battled to a 0 – 0 tie in the first half but due to some mental and physical errors in the second half allowed Bentley to score 4 goals. The Vikings did not give up and did a good job controlling the ball in the second half and managed to score two goals before time ran out. Valley traveled to Berkeley this afternoon to play its’ first league game of the season and lost 6 – 2. The Vikings looked strong at the beginning of the game and scored first at the 4th minute on a goal by Bucky Layton (his first goal as a Varsity player) with an assist by Cliff Woodward.
The Vikings looked solid for the next 15 min. of play. Then Valley’s key mid fielder (Dakota Yates) left the game with a pulled groin muscle. The Vikings were now down to one sub on the sideline due to illness and injury. With bench players filling in, the Vikings struggled against a very good College prep team but continued to battle hard. In the last minute of play there was a hand ball called in the penalty area and a penalty kick awarded to College Prep which they scored on to give them the victory. Cliff Woodard assisted on the first goal and scored the Vikings second goal at the 58th min. The Vikings take a break from league play until Monday but have an non-league game Thursday vs. Chinese Christian.

Valley hosted Oakland Military Academy this afternoon in a pre-season/non-league game and came away with the win on a score of 4 to 3. Playing their third game in a row in as many days, the Vikings fought hard to the end with George Prieto providing the winning goal at the 77th min. of the game. It was a very exciting game to watch (unless you are the coach), with six of the goals scored in the second half. In addition to George, Ryan Baker and Daniel Kim each scored a goal along with one scored for us by Oakland on a header crossed by Ryan Baker. Dakota Yates and Daniel Kim had strong performances at mid-field for the Vikings and Tyer Greer added some strength on field from his usual Goalie position.
This ends the Vikings pre-season schedule which resulted in a 3 win, 3 tie, 2 loss record. The Vikings travel to Berkeley on Tuesday to play their first league game against College Prep. I am pleased with the progress and the over all improvement of the team and think we are ready for league play.

Valley hosted Urban High School this afternoon in a pre-season/non-league game that resulted in a 0 – 0 tie. The Vikings played their best game of the season thus far with much better ball control and a solid defensive effort. It is to bad that their effort did not result in a win but it was really a tough match against a division 4 team. Valley finished the game a man short due to Andrew Park receiving a Red Card late in the second half but managed to maintain control. Unfortunately, Andrew will now be required to sit out our next game (vs. Oakland Military) which is tomorrow for receiving the Red Card. Tyler Greer continues to improve his play and made 8 saves during the game. Valley took 10 shots on goal and Urban took 11 which testifies to the closeness of the game.
Valley’s record is now, 2 wins, 3 ties, and 2 losses

One of our two Freshmen players (James Leyva) scored his first high school goal at the 45th minute from a follow up shot from a corner kick. Tyler Greer our starting goalie playing the half-back position, scored a beautiful head shot from a cross by Ryan Baker in the 53ed min. Daniel Kim scored his first goal of the season at the 38th min. from an assist by George Perieto. The Vikings continue to improve and will truly enjoy a 3 day rest over the Labor Day weekend. Valley hosted Fremont Christian this afternoon in a pre-season, non-league game. In a hard fought game, on a hot afternoon, the game ended in a tie 2 – 2. Ryan Baker scored first directly from a Corner Kick at the 13th minute. In the second half, Dakota Yates scored a beautiful header from a cross by Ryan Baker on a corner kick at the 54th min. Valley could not hold the lead and Fremont scored in the 57th min. to tie the game. As played slowed due to heat and fatigue by both teams so did the shots on goal.
Valley played their best game thus far this season and is improving. Player positions are solidifying and control of the ball is getting better. Tyler Greer played an excellent game in the goal making three key saves and coming off his line numerous times to assist the defense.
Valley travels to Santa Clara tomorrow to play North Valley Baptist in another non-league, pre-season game.

Valley hosted LPS-Hayward this afternoon and lost 4-2. After LPS scored in the first minute, the Vikings battled back the rest of the half but could not score. George Perieto scored on a Penalty Kick at the 52minute in the second half to tie the game. LPS using some excellent passing against a banged up Valley team then scored 3 goals in a span of about 6 to 8 min. which sealed the Vikings fate of a loss. Yet, in stopage time (regulation time had run out) George Perieto scored probably one of the prettiest goals I have seen here at Valley. Assisted by a tremendous cross from the left side of the field by Dakota Yates, George made a leaping head shot into the upper right corner of the goal. It truly was a tremendous goal. The Vikings will take a days rest before playing two games in a row. Thursday against Fremont Christian then Friday vs. North Valley Baptist.

Valley hosted Contra Costa Christian this afternoon and tied them one to one. George Perieto scored Valley’s only goal unassisted about seven minutes into the game. The Vikings improved their play from Tuesday’s game but had a very difficult time finishing the ball today. Valley out shot Contra Costa 12 to 4. The Vikings host LPS- Hayward next Tuesday.

Yesterday the Vikings played their first game of the 2010 Season. It was a practice game against Lick Wilmerding played in San Francisco at Balboa Park. The Vikings struggled against a very good team that won the match 9 to 2. We are still trying to figure out proper positions for players and integrate new/inexperienced players into the team. Although difficult to be handed such a defeat in our first game, it was educational for players and coach. The Vikings played a little better in the second half and even managed to score two goals. Dakota Yates scored on a corner kick from Ryan Baker and Ryan Baker scored on a Penalty Kick due to a foul on George Perieto in the Penalty Area.
The Vikings play Contra Costa Christian at home on Thursday at 4:00 PM.
